Hear Me Roar Symposium: Labour, Class, Protest

The Centre for Gender and Women’s Studies at Lancaster University invites proposals for papers for its third annual Hear Me Roar symposium. Hear Me Roar! is an annual festival of feminist arts which takes place in city and campus venues across Lancaster. HMR uniquely brings together professional and community-led artistic activity within a rigorous academic framework. In bringing together diverse communities and ideas, HMR provides a powerful platform to instigate positive social change by promoting intergenerational dialogue, understanding and co-operation between feminists (or those with an interest in feminism/feminist discourses) past, present and future. HMR utilises artistic activity to disseminate, explore and make accessible world-class research on gender equality. The festival is committed to creating playful and engaging environments in which to develop audiences for feminist arts practices, artworks of feminist interest, and other activities exploring equality and diversity.

About the Symposium

We invite proposals for papers and short provocations on this year’s theme of labour, class and protest. Recent feminist and anti-racist protests across the world have galvanised interest in feminist activism. But this moment of solidarity has raised important questions for feminist activists, artists and scholars: who has access to public spaces of dissent? Do popular solidarity movements create their own forms of marginality and exclusion? And to what extent does protest translate into actual social change?

We invite proposals that engage with these questions or with any aspect of feminist work on labour, class and activism in relation to any aspect of arts, performance, drama, comedy, film, media and culture.  We particularly welcome work which takes an intersectional approach to feminist research. In keeping with the ethos of Hear Me Roar we welcome traditional 20-minute academic papers as well as non-traditional formats shorter 5-minute provocations.
